FAQs

  • A NIF - which stands for Número de Identificação Fiscal, sometimes called a ‘Número de Contribuinte’ - is your Portuguese tax identification number. It’s a 9-digit number and you’ll need it for most things in Portugal with a financial element.

For example, you’ll normally need your NIF for paying taxes, if you want to open a bank account, rent or buy a property, get a mobile phone contract or utility bill in your name, and much more.

You’ll also be asked for it in shops or at the supermarket (usually the cashier will say “Contribuinte?” rather than the word NIF). You don’t have to give it, but you can sometimes get tax back against certain items.

  • No. The NIF service is provided by our friends at Bordr, and Portugalxpert are merely offering a referral and recommendation of their service.
